A woman identified as T. Sumbana, aged 48 years and resident of Machava-Bunhiça in Matola, was discovered a few days ago by the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PR M) to be in possession of a loaded AK-47 assault rifle.
According to a police source, the woman intended to sell the gun for around 30,000 meticais, and is currently being held in the PRM 1st Station in Maputo.
The arrest was made possible by the complaints of neighbours who knew of the weapon’s existence and felt threatened by it. Investigations are underway to determine the gun’s provenance.
Speaking at a press conference a few days ago in Maputo, spokesman for the General Command of the PRM, Inacio Dina, said that the incident sits well with operations which had resulted in the retrieving of a significant number of weapons across the country.
Dina said that optimally, illegally held weapons would be handed over voluntarily, and called for the public to cooperate in a measure aimed at taking material constituting a danger to public order and tranquillity out of circulation.
