At least one person was killed and 48 others were injured in an accident on Saturday night (December 17) in Maxixe municipality, Inhambane province, southern Mozambique.
According to Mozambican television, the crash involved a Transportes Nhancale passenger bus, which was travelling between the city of Beira in Sofala province and Maputo.
Witnesses said poor overtaking and speeding caused the accident.
“We were coming from Beira, and when we arrived at Save River, the driver said that he really had to put his foot down to get to Maputo before ten o’clock,” one witness said.
“But he ended up overturning the vehicle, because he was trying to overtake another vehicle and couldn’t, and crashed,” he added.
Another injured passenger said he though the rain that was falling at the time contributed to the accident.
“We left Maxixe, and had gone a little way. I do not know if it was because of the rain that was falling, because the driver was travelling at high speed. When he got to the turn, I think he could not control the bus and he overturned.”
The Mozambican police (PRM) in Maxixe have so far declined to make a statement. The whereabouts of the bus driver is unknown.
