The family of Zófimo Muiuane, accused of the murder of his wife Valentina Guebuza, daughter of former president Armando Guebuza, has expressed “shame and outrage” at what happened and asked the victim’s family for forgiveness.
“We are ashamed and outraged at the action of our family member and we ask the Guebuza family for forgiveness,” Muiane’s elder brother Armando Pedro said in a message he read out during Valentina Guebuza’s funeral.
Armando Pedro also said that the family did not “identify itself with the [ Zófimo’s] barbarous act” and were good, humble people.
The suspect’s brother said the family had not noticed any signs of unease in the marriage between Valentina Guebuza and Zófimo Muiane, and expressed gratitude for the affection and friendship that the daughter of the former head of state had shown to her husband’s family.
“That same Wednesday we were talking about preparations for Christmas,” said Pedro, who several times cried unashamedly in front of the hundreds of people attending the funeral.
Later, in one of the ceremony’s most moving moments, Armando Pedro and his father Armando embraced Armando Guebuza for about two minutes.
Valentina Guebuza’s funeral was held on Saturday at the Presbyterian Church of Chamanculo, a suburb of the Mozambican capital, where she was married two years ago, and was attended by the current head of state, Filipe Nyusi, the former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano, members and supporters of the ruling party Frelimo and members of current and former Mozambican governments.
Police said on Thursday that Valentina Guebuza, 36, was shot and killed, allegedly by her husband, Zófimo Muiuane, at the couple’s home in Maputo, leaving a daughter of one year six months.
Valentina da Luz Guebuza, 36, was one of the most outstanding entrepreneurs in the country.
In December 2013, Forbes magazine ranked her among the 20 most powerful African young people in Africa. She was head of the Focus 21 Management and Development family holding company, with interests in industries including banking, telecommunications, fisheries, transport, mining and real estate.
On July 26, 2014, she married Zófimo Muiuane, head of the marketing department of telecommunications operator Mcel, in a ceremony at Chamanculo Presbyterian Church near Maputo.
