Mozambique Elections: MDM denounces tampering with voter roll in Beira - AIM
The Embassy of the United States of America has praised the extension of the temporary cessation of hostilities for a further two months, saying the decision was a significant step forward for lasting peace.
In a press release received on Wednesday by AIM, the embassy expresses its wish to see a permanent cessation of the hostilities that have lasted for more than four years in Mozambique.
“It is our hope that, based on this achievement, the Mozambican government and Renamo can show equal courage in resolving the political differences that have persisted and establish a permanent peace and democratic basis for the socio-economic development of all Mozambicans,” the press release reads.
This decision was made by President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi and Afonso Dhlakama, the leader of Renamo, the main opposition party in Mozambique, during telephone conversations they have had.
The decision was made public on Tuesday by Afonso Dhlakama during one of his regular telephone press conferences. At the time, Dhlakama said that the understanding with the head of state was an attempt to pave the way for the ongoing political dialogue to produce fruitful results.
“When I announced the truce for seven days last week, I did not rule out the possibility of extending the period if things went according to plan,” he said.
At a press conference in Maputo, spokesman for the Mozambican Police General Command Inácio Dina said that mandatory military escorts on the main roads in the center of the country had been suspended following the truce declared by Dhlakama.
For more than four years, the government and Renamo have been discussing the cessation of military hostilities in the country. In December last year, the team of international mediators in the second round of negotiations left the country without any consensus being reached on the issues debated. The point under discussion at the time was the administrative decentralization of Mozambique.
