The US embassy in Maputo Wednesday joined the Deputy Director General of the Mozambican National Migration Service (SENAMI) and the Head of Mission of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Bilene for the opening ceremony of a three-day seminar on improving the capacity of SENAMI officials, a press release from the US embassy in Maputo reads.
Participants included provincial migration directors and other senior migration officials from across the country.
As well as developing identification management skills, the seminar will familiarise participants with alternatives to detention and the voluntary assisted return and reintegration program.
The seminar is only one component of a border management training programme funded by the US government and implemented by the IOM, the communiqué adds. The programme includes a comprehensive assessment of capabilities and needs in border management, development of standard operating procedures to improve inter-agency communication and cooperation, and the provision of training and equipment.
The project aims to enable the Mozambique government to strengthen the nation’s ability to protect its national borders, combat transnational organised crime and prevent illicit trafficking in goods, people and wildlife.
The project is an example of the United States’ comprehensive collaboration with the government of Mozambique, in coordination with partners such as IOM, to promote economic prosperity, combat transnational criminal threats, and strengthen governmental and democratic institutions, the US embassy press release states.
