Mozambique: Sentencing of MDM political delegates in Beira set for the eve of elections
STV / António Chulo is the second vice-president of Inhambane's Provincial Assembly, elected by Renamo
Antonio Chulo, latest Renamo member to be shot on Mozambique’s streets, has given further details of his attack from his hospital bed, revealing that he was followed by three men who shot him in the back and then fled.
“The people chased me from behind. Meanwhile, they had parked the car next to a neighbour of mine. After shooting me they fled in the direction I was going, entered the vehicle and fled. There were three individuals. They did not say anything to me. They only they shot me and I fell on the spot,” said Antonio Chulo from the hospital bed where he is fighting for his life.
Antonio Chulo says that he had never received threats, but that a few days ago he had been told to order Renamo men stationed in Mabote and Funhalouro to leave, and believes that his not doing so might be the reason behind the attack.
“When I was approached about this, I replied that I had no control over the men. I told them I did not know how they came to be there and how they were operating. So I was not able to oblige. I believe this may have contributed to the attack. I spoke about it in the Provincial Assembly at the time,” the deputy president said.
Although the victim is conscious, doctors consider his condition serious. “The patient was shot three times. One bullet entered his shoulder, another went in through his back and out through his lower abdomen. There is a third bullet somewhere inside his body but we cannot find it. In total there were four holes,” medical staff said.
