Tobacco growers in the Angonia and Macanga districts of Tete province, central Mozambique, risk seeing large quantities of tobacco surpluses deteriorate due to lack of market demand, Mozambican state news agency AIM, reported.
The tobacco ended up remaining in the hands of rural workers, because Mozambique Leaf Tobacco (MLT), the only company to buy production in both districts, did not have enough money to absorb the product, the state news agency quoted producers as saying.
Angónia district administrator Paulo Sebastião told a press conference that contacts are being made for companies in Malawi and South Africa to buy the tobacco surplus in Tete province.
“This measure is to safeguard the rural workers’ production,” he said.
Sebastião said a survey would be made of the actual amount of tobacco held by producers to allow coordination with any potential purchasers for the tobacco.
Lusa was unable to reach MLT on the issue.
