The UN has pledged to mobilize international support to help victims of the cyclone which hit Inhambane province in southern Mozambique on Wednesday, killing seven and wounding 55.
“We will mobilize the international humanitarian system to support the victims of this calamity, taking into account the most pressing priorities, which are shelter and subsistence,” UN resident coordinator in Maputo Márcia Castro said during a meeting yesterday with Mozambique’s National Institute for the Management of Natural Disasters.
The UN had sent teams to the districts of Inhambane province affected by the cyclone to assess the needs of the populations and monitor the availability of aid, Castro added.
INGC Director General Osvaldo Machatine said that the cyclone had left 770,000 people vulnerable, destroying 106 classrooms and 70 health units, and that his institution estimated the amount needed to restore infrastructure destroyed by the cyclone at 900 million meticais (EUR 12 million).
The cyclone began as a tropical depression over Mozambique Channel and increased speed as it approached the coast, with winds gusting up to 150 kilometers per hour.
