The Mozambican police on Tuesday arrested a man at Maputo International Airport when he was attempting to smuggle five kilos of cocaine to Ivory Coast, according to a report on the independent television station, STV.
The 54 year old man, whose name has not been released, is a citizen of Guinea-Conakry. He was booked on a flight from Maputo to Addis Ababa, and intended to fly on from the Ethiopian capital to Abidjan.
The police at the airport found a false bottom in his suitcase. When they opened it, they found it contained 5.2 kilos of cocaine.
Police spokesperson Leonel Muchina said the trafficker was arrested thanks to the efforts undertaken by the security forces at the airport to stamp out drug trafficking.
The airport has achieved an unsavoury reputation as a gateway for the movement of illicit drugs into and out of Mozambique. The authorities say they are clamping down on the traffickers. According to police statistics, last year two or three people a week were detained at the airport for drug offences.
