Five of the country’s border posts will be open 24 hours a day from tomorrow until January 8, 2017, to cope with increased festive season traffic.
The Ressano Garcia and Goba stations in Maputo province, plus the Pemba, Nacala and Beira Maritime Stations, which normally operate from 06:00 to 22:00 hours, are covered by the measure.
Cira Fernandes, spokesperson for the National Migration Service (SENAMI), said that additional human and material resources were being sent to these posts to reduce waiting time. If traffic justifies it, the measure will be extended to the remaining border posts, Fernandes said.
SENAMI expects less movement this season compared to 2015 as a result of the current socio-economic situation. Figures for last week show 32 percent less cross-border traffic, with a total number of 91,946 travellers, against 135,456 in the same period of 2015. Of this number, 45,299 were entries and 46,647 exits, of which 49,622 were national citizens and 42,324 are foreigners.
Meanwhile, the Joint Operational Command involving the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, INATTER, the Directorate General of Customs and the National Migration Service, will this morning launch “Operation Salama”, designed to guarantee public order and security at national borders and roads during the Christmas and New Year festive season, at the Center for Paramilitary Instruction of the Tax Authority in Boane.
