Tomás Timbane, the partner who heads TTA, which is a member of PLMJ Network, has recently been named the member to represent Mozambique at the ICC – International Court of Arbitration, with effect from 1 July this year.
The ICC is the world’s leading arbitration institution and the court is its main body for arbitrations and mediation. Tomás Timbane was appointed by the ICC, and this is the first time Mozambique has had a member in the International Court of Arbitration.
Tomás Timbane is a PLMJ international partner and was president of the Mozambique Bar Association between 2013/16. He says “it was a great honour and it will be a great privilege to be able to serve international arbitration as a member of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. Mozambique is new to the world of international arbitration, but it will be increasingly involved in disputes that should be resolved by arbitration, as a result of the growth of the country and ever greater levels of foreign investment. The involvement of Mozambique is crucial to the better development of arbitration in general and international arbitration in particular. Bringing ICC arbitration to Mozambique will raise the profile of the country in the world of arbitration, and this is important not only for the Mozambican institutions involved in it, but also for Mozambican professionals who work in this area.”
José Miguel Júdice, a former member of the Court and the partner who heads PLMJ Arbitration, welcomed this appointment which he sees as an honour for PLMJ Arbitration’s multinational team.
Júdice says that “Tomás Timbane has the most appropriate profile for this enormous responsibility, as he is clearly one of the most international and well-respected Mozambican lawyers. I have worked with him on complex international arbitrations and his wisdom and youth give me confidence in saying that he will undoubtedly be one of the leading names in dispute resolution on the African continent in the near future.”
