Attorney General, Beatriz Buchili, defended today in Maputo the need to create a special unit specialized in recovering assets held by criminal organizations. Speaking at the closure of the 10thOrdinary Session of the Public Prosecutor’s Coordinating Council, the senior lawyer stressed that the inability by state and government authorities to recover criminally acquired assets sends the message to the civil society that crime goes unpunished.
Only a special regime’s institution can deprive criminals from the profits generated by their illegal deeds. Beatriz Buchili also insisted on international cooperation in the fight against organized crime, all the more so because of the increasing sophistication and complexity of criminal activities, notably due to the development of new technologies.
Overcrowding in jails is also a priority concern for Beatriz Buchili. She is of the view that cooperation among the several institutions of the legal system is critical to solve such an issue. “We must find a better articulation and a more intense coordination of our actions, aiming at guaranteeing the legality of legal detentions and the strict respect their term”, says the Attorney general.
