The Swedish government will provide about US$500 million (EUR 458 million) to support development projects in Mozambique over the next five years, the Swedish embassy in Maputo announced on Thursday.
“This is a new strategy for the coming years and reaffirms our special relationship,” the Swedish Ambassador Irina Nyoni told the press at a seminar commemorating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The amount, which includes support for Mozambique’s budget, will support projects related to the environment, sustainable development, democracy and gender equality, and is another fruit of a relationship which, 40 years on, her government assessed positively.
In addition, the Swedish government will spend approximately ten million euros supporting scientific research in partnership with Eduardo Mondlane University. “We think it is important and to continue this relationship,” the diplomat said.
Referring to military clashes between the defence and security forces and the armed wing of the main opposition party, Renamo (Mozambique National Resistance), Nyoni said the situation is “very complicated,” but that she was confident that Mozambicans could find solutions to their problems.
“We need to have a little patience. A lot has happened in recent times. We need to remember that Mozambique has relatively few years’ experience,” the ambassador said, reiterating her country’s willingness to contribute to the development process.
In reply, former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano also delivered a positive assessment of the relationship between the two countries, saying that over 40 years, a climate of trust had been created.
“There are tangible results in all areas of cooperation between Mozambique and Sweden. I speak, for example, of education and agriculture,” said the former Mozambican president, praising the role of Sweden in expanding the electricity grid in the most remote districts of the country.
“Sweden has always been connected with the search for peace in Mozambique,” added Chissano.
