Sweden’s International Development Cooperation Agency will free up US$21 million (€18 million) to help Mozambique combat maritime pollution caused by plastic, the organisation told local newspaper O País on Thursday.
Carole Martinez, from the International Development Cooperation Agency, said the funds would go towards supporting policies to combat maritime pollution within the MARPLASTICCs project [the Marine Plastics and Coastal Communities initiative, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida)].
“We will be working with Mozambique’s authorities to strengthen policies and make them more comprehensive in combating pollution of the sea caused by plastic,” Martinez said.
Isabel Chaúca, from Mozambique’s Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries,, said the coastal areas of the city of Beira, in the centre of the country, and Pemba, in the north, had been selected to undergo cleaning in the framework of Sweden’s support.
