Swaziland has suspended importing 10 percent of electricity from Mozambique because of high rates, APA reports on Monday. Swaziland imports 80 percent of its electricity from South Africa and generates only 10 percent locally, adding to the 10 percent that was exported from Mozambique.
The Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC), through Acting Managing Director Meshack Kunene, says Mozambique’s charges were steeper than those of South Africa’s ESKOM.
The company says the water levels are too low in Swaziland, also making it impossible for SEC to source additional electricity from Ubombo Sugar Limited, which is generating its own electricity.
