While the authorities and population are still counting the cost of Monday’s storm in Maputo, Mozambique’s Meteorology Institute (INAM) forecasts more bad weather for the country’s southern and central regions in the coming days.
INAM’s Telmo Sumila warned that Maputo’s Monday scenario could be repeated in the central region and part of Inhambane province in the coming days.
“We anticipate this system moving to the central region of the country, particularly Manica and Sofala. Inhambane province in the south will also be affected. The effects of this weather system will remain equal to what we saw in Maputo. We are talking about showers accompanied by heavy thunderstorms and strong winds,” Sumila said.
The meteorologist explained: “This phenomenon is common at this time of year on days with slightly high temperatures and nights with high cloudiness. These circumstances, with the increased convective energy potential, cause heavy rains, strong winds and violent thunderstorms.”
The INAM expert said it was not possible to issue a thunderstorm warning because the phenomena developed so suddenly. “We predicted the occurrence of the event, but not the magnitude that was observed,” Sumila said.
