India’s Minister of State for External Affairs will visit Mozambique starting on Sunday to strengthen relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, according to an official statement released today.
During his visit, Vijay Kumar Singh will be welcomed by the Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, and will also meet with ministers of National Defence, Atanásio Mtumuke, Mineral Resources and Energy, Esnesto Max Tonela, and Industry and Commerce, Regendra de Sousa.
“The visit is an opportunity to assess the level of implementation of the actions agreed upon during the visit by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to Mozambique in 2016 and to review the stage of bilateral cooperation,” the statement says.
The visit of Prime Minister Modi culminated in the signing of three cooperation agreements between Mozambique and India covering the areas of drug control, agricultural production and marketing, and youth and sports.
In 2015, trade between the two countries was worth US$2.4 billion. Indian investments in Mozambique are valued at US$7 billion, focussed on the coal and hydrocarbon sectors.
India was the first Asian country to be visited by Filipe Nyusi in his capacity as Mozambican head of state in August 2015.
