Mozambique: At least three killed in Chimbanga attack, Mocímboa da Praia district
O País
Police in Sofala have detained four men who posed as members of the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces to steal from and rape victims in Dondo municipality in Sofala.
Last Friday, the gang raided a home and forced their victims to hand over money with machetes.
“As we did not have any money, they decided to take everything from inside and all our chickens and ducks. But before that, they tied and gagged us all, including two children between the ages of seven and nine and an 80-year-old woman. In addition, they still tried to rape us,” one of the victims said.
The detainees confirmed their involvement in the crime to O País and explained that they used the uniforms to frighten their victims. The leader of the group said the uniforms belonged to one of his relatives who was once a Mozambique Defence Armed Forces member but had died.
Three of the four detainees had previously been detained more than once for robbery, police said. One of them was in fact released only last week after serving a six-month sentence for burglary.
