The Marés Shopping Center, located next to the Costa do Sol Beach in Maputo, reopened provisionally this morning after paying a fine of 500,000 meticais and guaranteeing that its wastewater treatment plant works.
The facility was closed yesterday for non-compliance with basic environmental management standards. During the operation, one of the managers of the enterprise physically assaulted a photographer.

Eduardo Samuel, director general of the National Agency for Environmental Quality Control (AQUA), the entity that ordered the closure of the facility, told Notícias Online that the owners of Marés also submitted documents revealing that they have hired a team of environmental managers, whose fault another anomaly detected by the inspection team was.
Taking into account the moves made to safeguard the public interest, AQUA authorised that the mall be reopened provisionally while the owners continued with the correction of other faults, such as the lack of an environmental impact study.
While the sewage treatment plant was inoperative, the contents of the toilets were discharged directly into the sea without minimising harmful impact on ecosystems and bathers’ health.
The Marés Shopping Centre has about 50 establishments and 62 apartments of various types.
