South African Oil company Sasol says it is working to hire more local companies in the southern province of Inhambane in Mozambique, in a measure aimed at improving local content.
The company also says it intends to consolidate its presence in the hydrocarbon industry in the country, particularly in Inhambane.
This pledge was given yesterday by the director of Sasol in Mozambique, Mauricio Malate, during a presentation entitled “Experiences and Investment Opportunities in the Area of Hydrocarbons in Inhambane – Challenges and Perspectives”.
The presentation was made at the Inhambane Province Investment Conference, an event that runs until today (Friday) under the motto: “Together , for a prosperous Inhambane”. The opening session was by the Prime Minister of Mozambique, Carlos Agostinho do Rosário.
“Mozambique is on our growth strategy at the level of Southern Africa and Inhambane is at the centre of this strategy. For us, it is important that Inhambane has a promising future, because this is later reflected in benefits for the company,” Malate said.
Sasol also expressed its desire to develop local communities, evidenced in interventions to boost the socio-economic development of the province worth about US$23 million.
“If, initially, our operations were conducted by foreign personnel, now our staff is more than 85 percent Mozambican, and this is throughout the company structure,” Malate said.
Sasol is currently exploring natural gas in the fields of Panda and Temane in an investment worth US$1.2 trillion. The project started with annual production capacity of 120 million gigajoules, which has expanded to around 200 million gigajoules.
Questioned by Tomas Salomão, Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) of Cervejas de Moçambique, on the reasons for the poor availability of natural gas in the domestic market, Malate said that the volume placed on the market corresponded to the quota that the Mozambican government is entitled to under the exploitation contract.
“It is the gas that we have to pay to the government as a form of taxation, which is used to promote the industrialisation of the country,” he said.
More than 400 people from all provinces of the country and around the world, including investors and cooperation partners, attended the event.
