Mozambique: Employees thwart attempted kidnaping of Maputo businessman - report
O País
The border town of Ressano Garcia, in the Moamba district of Maputo province, saw moments of chaos on Friday night when a number of residents took to the streets to protest against alleged police misconduct.
The trouble began when the population seized and handed over a number of supposed criminals to the police, and demanded that the authorities make a public presentation of the group. Instead, the police shortly afterwards tried to move the men from the police station to an unknown location, arousing the crowd’s suspicion.
In response, the crowd decided to blocked the police car’s progress on suspicion that it was facilitating the group’s escape, something residents claims is a frequent occurrence, and barricaded part of the EN49 near the border with burning tires, carcasses and rocks.
This situation that lasted about two hours brought the movement of goods and people to a standstill until the police arrived at the place, and a strong police contingent backed by border guards fired shots in the air to disperse the protestors.
About 10 people were injured in the ensuing mêlée, two of whom were transferred from the village hospital to Matola Provincial Hospital and then to Maputo Central Hospital with gunshot wounds. These two, both female, are said to be in a serious condition.
Contacted by Jornal O Pais, the Maputo Police Command promised to comment on the matter on Monday.
