Gunmen of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) attacked the village headquarters of Banga in Tsangano district, Tete province, at dawn yesterday, local authorities cited by Radio Mozambique have reported.
According to the provincial police commander of Mozambique in Tete, Fabião Pedro Nhancololo, the group broke into the residence of the Banga head administrator and the facilities of the civil registry. Police reported that the group also stole all the drugs in the health post.
The radio also reported an unconfirmed number of deaths. Authorities say security has been tightened and that operations for the capture of the perpetrators are ongoing.
Mozambique has experienced a worsening of political violence in recent months, with clashes between Renamo and defence and security forces and mutual accusations of abduction and assassination of party members.
In late May, the Mozambican government and Renamo resumed negotiations on the political and military crisis in Mozambique, the main opposition party having abandoned dialogue with the executive in late 2015 on the grounds of lack of progress.
The main opposition party refuses to accept the results of the general elections in 2014, threatening to govern in the six provinces where it claims victory in the poll.
