Mozambique: Two men die in Chimoio in bid to save duck from well - Integrity
A guard at Quelimane provincial prison in Zambezia province is in trouble with the police, who accuse him of releasing prisoners at night to undertake robberies and burglaries.
The suspect, whose identity has not been revealed, “fell into popular hands”, and was arrested by citizens on Saturday 18 June 18 in the company of an inmate who was allegedly preparing to commit a crime.
Police believe that this is not the first time the guard has done this, but the guard claimed that at the time of his arrest he was simply following the prisoner in order to buy a mobile phone recharge voucher.
According to law and order officials, an individual deprived of his liberty cannot be released to buy anything. The prison guard is to be charged with abandoning his post and setting a prisoner free and a criminal case following the proper legal procedures for holding the suspect to account is underway.
