Catholic bishops in Mozambique have issued another pastoral letter expressing their concern about the lack of consensus between the government and Renamo over the restoration of peace and the free movement of people and goods. In the document, the bishops say that private interests are delaying peace.
“We deplore the fact that hidden, private interests are delaying the end of this armed conflict, which continues to sow mourning, pain, fear, anxiety, anguish and insecurity within the Mozambican family,” the letter reads. The conflict is compromising “the normal course of social life and the future of Mozambique,” the bishops say.
The document also voices the bishops’ concerns over the hidden debts, hunger and natural disasters.
“It is with deep sorrow that we observe the suffering of our people, with natural disasters, drought and floods leaving the population in a situation of hunger and food insecurity,” the bishops write. “And because of the economic crisis, indebtedness, the intensification of political-military tension, the generalisation of violence and disrespect for the value of life signalled by the lynching, and burning of houses, we also lament attitudes and actions of intolerance, arrogance and indifference to the continuous cry of all Mozambican society: ‘peace, peace, dialogue’.”
