The president of the Mozambican Police Association was kidnapped on Tuesday on the Acordos de Lusaka Avenue in Maputo and severely beaten. Nazario Muanambane was only released six hours later and is currently hospitalised with fractures.
According to the victim, quoted by the newspaper O País, the kidnappers carried a pistol and an AK47 and the kidnapping was swift and terrifying.
O País reports that Muanambane has fractures to both his legs and wounds on his back.
According to the same source, the victim says that, after blindfolding him, the group demanded the 16 million meticais [around US$276.145 at current exchange rates] they believed he was carrying on him.
After two hours of threats from the men, they joined another group and began to beat him.
The victim ended up handing over his credit cards and their codes, but the assailants were still not satisfied. In addition to documents, the criminals took the key to the victim’s car and some cash.
Muanambane was released only around 11:00 pm in the Costa do Sol area, where he was found and taken to Maputo Central Hospital.
