President Nyusi arrived in New York yesterday to participate in the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, guided by the theme “Making the United Nations Relevant for All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies”.
Nyusi will address the UN General Assembly on Tuesday and “convey a message of Mozambique’s commitment to deepening peace and national reconciliation and the promotion of a favourable environment for investment for development,” the presidency said in a statement.
Speaking to Mozambican journalists in New York on Saturday, Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister José Pacheco explained that the first part of the UN General Assembly 73rd session will give heads of state and government the opportunity to address the General Assembly.
The Mozambican head of state will there share information on the country’s social and economic situation, specifically the challenges of creating conditions for the well-being of the population.
“There will then be a series of parallel sessions – bilateral and multilateral – on the initiative of the government of Mozambique in this process of making more friends and seeking mutually advantageous partnerships,” Pacheco detailed.
There will be two specifically Mozambican events: a private sector business forum involving Mozambican and North American entrepreneurs, and another on Gorongosa National Park, where conservation presentations will be made.
The visit will also be an opportunity to sell the potential of investment and export products, especially cashew nuts and tea.
President Nyusi will be in the US until the Friday 28 September.
The President’s delegation includes Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Pacheco, Minister of Health, Nazira Abdula, Minister of Land, Environment and Rural Development, Celso Correia and Minister of Industry and Commerce , Ragendra de Sousa.
The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly opened on 18 September, with the first day of general debate scheduled for Tuesday, 25 September 2018, and the session in its entirety scheduled to last until October 5. Leaders from 193 countries are expected.
