The president of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi has sent a congratulatory message to the African Union on its 54th anniversary.
The occasion is celebrated under the motto ‘Harnessing the Demographic Dividend by Investing in Youth’, and this year marks 14 years since the AU’s birth after the disbandment of its predecessor, the Organisation of African Unity.
Nyusi said that the choice of motto stemmed from the importance of investing in youth for the achievement of national and continental development aspirations, and to draw attention to the importance of making the most of this age group to accelerate development in the African continent for the well-being of all.
In a press release received by AIM, the Mozambican president said that the eagerness and energy of African youth are the continent’s greatest assets and guarantee the progress that Africa and Mozambique deserve.
“Let us celebrate Africa Day as we reflect on improving the policies, strategies and actions that motivate young people to become the driving force for development through investments in their health, education, training, employability and capacity to realise the dividend that the motto well suggests”, said the president.
The president said that his government would remain committed to actions to achieve the goals set by the regional roadmap and to provide a coordinated discussion on appropriate responses to the concerns of young people at the national, regional and continental levels.
President Nyusi urged all Mozambicans, regardless of their political or religious affiliation, their race, sex and age to participate with enthusiasm and a sense of belonging in the activities and events alluding to the celebration of the AU’s anniversary.
