The Companhia de Sena in the Marromeu district of Sofala province is producing a sugar substitute called Stevia and will soon be exporting it to China. Currently there are two trial nurseries and a half-hectare field, with 4 to 8 more hectares projected by the end of year.
President Nyusi visited the project and heard details of the growth plan. The commercial production for the Asian market is the first step, after which the product will be sold to food and medical industries in Europe and America.
Companhia de Sena currently produces more than 48,000 tons of traditional sugar a year, down from 75,000 tons in 2012. One of the largest and most modern sugar companies in the country, Sena employs more than 7,000 people.
