Mozambique: Suspicion surrounding Credit Suisse deal - NGO
Receiving an honorary doctorate from the Geneva School of Diplomacy in Switzerland on Tuesday, President Filipe Nyusi said it was time to heal the wounds and boost the country’s peace process.
“It is time to heal the wounds. It is time to move forward with a collective determination to build a country based on the principles of a democratic and lawful state,” the head of state, quoted by the Mozambican Information Agency, said.
Nyusi said that “agreements are vital, but they are not enough. We must create, in parallel, a new culture, a culture of permanent and constructive dialogue, without fear or prejudice”.
This was a culture that “should be promoted by example by leaders in their political and personal conduct, and in the way they defend national interests above any other”, he added.
Filipe Nyusi was speaking at the ceremony in which he was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations for the peace negotiations he has conducted with the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo).
The president said that the country’s history continued to be marked by the search for negotiated solutions to conflicts, “even when we are apparently strong and, above all, when we are strong and we know that our cause is just”.
In the speech, he described the dialogue with Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama from the beginning of his term as a process conducted in a constructive and ‘bona fide’ spirit.
“With peace, we will bring greater social cohesion to the country and consolidate national unity within the Mozambican family,” he added.
Filipe Nyusi and Afonso Dhlakama, leader of Renamo, have announced concrete progress towards signing a definitive peace agreement for the country, the latest of which has resulted in an agreed proposal to revise the constitution in favour of a more decentralised state.
Both also announced interim understandings on the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of armed opposition fighters.
