Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi was received by Pope Francis today. The Vatican News correspondent Junno Arocho Esteves writes in his Twitter page that President Nyusi announced to journalists that the Pope will visit Mozambique next year and that the Pope responded by saying: “If I’m still alive”.
President Nyusi’s offical visit to the Vatican has the issue of effective peace in Mozambique top of the agenda, according to an earlier report by Radio Mozambique’s special envoy to the Vatican.

The ambassador of the Holy See in Maputo, Edgar Peña Parra, had recently said that the peace issue was likely to dominate the meeting between the Mozambican statesman and Pope Francisco.
“One of the main themes is peace in Mozambique. Pope Francisco is committed to peace, as also is the president,” said Archbishop Peña Parra.
After the meeting with the Pope, which was to last about 30 minutes, Nyusi will lead a Mozambican delegation in a meeting with the Vatican’s secretariat of state.
It is at this meeting that Mozambique will demonstrate its willingness to maintain bilateral cooperation and explore new areas of cooperation, Minister of Foreign Affairs José Pacheco had said in Rome this Thursday.
“The great expectation is the reaffirmation of the interest of maintaining bilateral cooperation, exploring potential areas of cooperation and broadening the current base of [our relationship with] the Vatican,” he stressed.
In the afternoon President Nyusi will visit the Community of Sant’Egidio, where he has a meeting with Professor Andrea Riccardi.
