Mozambique: Military registration target surpassed - AIM report
A three-year-old girl called Chocolate Armando has died after being hit by a bullet fired by a plain-clothes policeman from the PRM 3rd Squadron in Matacuane, Beira.
According to Ana Calisto, witness and member of the victim’s family quoted by Diário de Moçambique, the child was playing with her friends in a field when two armed police officers appeared in hot pursuit of an illegal gambling gang member.
One of the agents fired the shot which hit Chocolate. “There were lots of children playing there. When the two policemen showed up running, the child, not realising what was happening, didn’t move and was hit by a bullet in the head. The policeman who fired the shot at her carried straight on, but his companion was told that there was a child injured and immediately took her to the Beira Central Hospital, where she arrived showing almost no signs of life,” she said.
Marta Eduardo, the victim’s aunt, said that the child’s mother was absent at the time and only found out that her daughter was in hospital later. “We do not believe this happens as a result of letting the children play, which is healthy. What surprises us is that the police are hunting so recklessly, firing a gun in a place where children are playing and without taking care,” said Marta.
