The Mozambican police have charged eleven people with drug-related offences following a crackdown on drugs abuse in the area of the capital city Maputo known as “Zona Militar”.
In its weekly report, the police general command revealed that the arrests were made on 3 August on charges of drug dealing and consumption. During the operation, police seized 55 mandrax tablets, 500 grammes of cocaine, 14 ampules of heroin, 13 unidentified drug bottles, and 17 syringes.
The police also announced that they detained a Nigerian woman on 28 July at Maputo International Airport as she attempted to board a South African Airways flight whilst carrying 69 capsules of cocaine.
During the same period, the police detained three people, including a 16-year-old, on firearms charges. The youth was arrested in the northern province of Niassa for possessing 19 bullets for an AK-47 assault rifle. Also detained were two people in Maputo on charges of possessing a pistol and a shotgun with 11 cartridges.
The police report added that over the week they recorded 125 crimes with 108 resolved. A total of 1,217 people were arrested throughout the country: 1,041 for border violations, 173 for common crimes, and three for illegal immigration.
