O País / Nazar Muanamane
Twenty-four hours after Maputo city police spokesman Paulo Nazaré said that Miro Chilaúle, who was killed on Thursday afternoon on the ring road, was only posing as a policeman for criminal purposes, O País went to the victim’s home and heard family members rebut the story, insisting that the deceased had been a policemen for at least 10 years.
Although stating categorically that the deceased was a member of the police force, Chilaúle’s relatives declined to show any documentary proof, referring reporters back to PRM General Command.
However, the family version is confirmed by the Mozambican Police Association. “We confirm that he was a member of the police, because we knew him. What we can not confirm is the type of course he did, because there are several types of training in the police. In addition, there are agents who come from SISE [Intelligence Services] and the Ministry of Defence. What we do know is that he carried out some activities within the police. He had access to the city’s command, entered the stations and worked with Criminal Investigation Police officers,” association president Nazar Muanamane said.
Muanamane said that it was up to PRM General Command to say what kind of work the dead man was doing and whether or not he had strayed from his competencies. “What the General Command has to say is whether he was a bad cop or not; whether or not he had deviated from his duties, because he was always with the police. They have to clarify what kind of work he carried out within the corporation. And since City Command says he was not a PRM agent, what was he?” Muanamane asked.
