Speedy delivery of public services and permanent vigilance and promptness in the fight against indiscipline, extortion and corruption are what is required of all agents in service at our borders and roads during the next festive season.
So said Director-General of Customs Aly Mallá in Ressano Garcia on Wednesday, at the launch of “Operation Kurhula 2017/2018”, in partnership with the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, National Institute Land Transport, the National Migration Service and the Mozambique Red Cross.
Operation Kurhula aims to impose a high standard of discipline, courtesy and professionalism on all public servants at Mozambican borders and on its roads over the Christmas period, so that road users can travel peaceably.
Mallá said that, for the operation to succeed, an elevated sense of discipline, ethics, integrity and exemplary teamwork were required.
“We express our deep satisfaction at the opportunity we have to be part of the joint plan of activities aimed at ensuring tranquillity at borders and on public roads during the forthcoming festive season,” he said.
Our newspaper has learned that free-transit cards will be issued to drivers crossing Mozambique’s borders during the festive season, curtailing stops for document verification en route and allowing vehicles greater mobility.
Timóteo Bernardo, deputy commander-in-chief of the police, said that the operation aimed to guarantee speedy customs clearance at all crossing points, as well as enhancing road traffic safety.
“The extortion of domestic and foreign citizens [of bribes], the consumption of alcoholic beverages by officers on duty and the non-application of measures to prevent traffic accidents are among the behaviours that may tarnish or render the operation unfeasible., You are therefore all urged to adopt exemplary behaviour,” he said.
The results of the operation, as Timóteo Bernardo said, would dignify all the institutions involved because they would without doubt improve the provision of services to the citizen, especially during peak hours.
“We want to substantially reduce the average clearance time for people and goods at our borders, especially in Ressano Garcia, Maputo province, Machipanda in Manica, and Zóbuè in Tete,” he explained.
