Mozambique: Ministry of Health on alert as flu cases rise
The Mozambican Doctors’ Order (OrMM) on Thursday in Maputo revealed that 717 doctors, which equates to 28 per cent of the profession, practiced illegally in 2015.
According to the head of OrMM, Eugenio Zacarias, a census undertaken last year found that there were 2,561 doctors in the country. However, the survey also found that 28 per cent of the doctors were not registered with OrMM and were thus practicing illegally.
Zacarias was speaking during the opening ceremony of a seminar that is being jointly held with the Attorney-General’s Office.
The head of OrMM also lamented that the country was still seriously short of doctors. He pointed out that the National Health Service only has one doctor for every 15,000 citizens. He added that if one looks at the national health system (which includes doctors working in the private sector) that number falls to one doctor for every 10,000 inhabitants.
Zacarias said that the census also highlighted the sad situation in regards to the unfair distribution of doctors throughout the country.
Assistant Attorney-General Alberto Paulo stated that meeting was the result of a memorandum of understanding between the two institutions. He said that it would “provide answers to some of the main issues which arise in our country concerning the illegal practice of medicine, medical malpractice, and criminal responsibility”.
