Oil company Anadarko, which is leading a natural gas project in northern Mozambique, is hoping to implement pilot projects in communities for the small-scale production of seaweed and sea cucumbers.
An announcement published in the Mozambican press on Friday requests interested parties to respond to details on programmes linked to fishing. The area covered includes the immediate vicinity of the Bay of Palma and the Afungi Peninsula, in the province of Cabo Delgado, where the Anadarko offshore project is located.
Anadarko hopes to conduct trials to assess the “feasibility of small-scale production of seaweed (Euchema and Kappaphycus) and sea cucumbers (Holothuria Scabra)”, as well as conducting a survey of current fishing practises and trialling innovative gear alongside providing post-capture training in the use of ice and emerging market opportunities.
The oil company is also looking for entities interested in providing technical assistance services for co-management of community fishing councils, a fishing equipment shop and a fishmongers.
The Anadarko scheme could involve a voucher system for equipment exchange as part-payment for fisheries.
The company is also looking for interested parties in collaborating in collecting data from fishermen and women and related to the activity and in providing coastal vessels to support the various activities.
US-based Anadarko Petroleum plans to invest US$15 billion in Cabo Delgado, but final investment decisions have not yet been announced.
