The heads of state of Angola and Mozambique will participate in the 10th BRICS Summit, which will take place from July 25 to 27 in Johannesburg, the South African Minister for International Relations and Cooperation announced yesterday.
Speaking to the press in Johannesburg on the presentation of the official summit program, Lindiwe Sisulu stressed that the visit of the two Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders is aimed at strengthening relations between BRICS countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and Africa in general.
“Membership of BRICS has been beneficial to our country and we would like to ensure that the rest of Africa can also take advantage of it, particularly now that the continent is starting to take the first steps towards the creation of free trade zones, where most of the countries have already signed the agreement, which is an important step for Africa,” the head of South African diplomacy said.
“We have set up a special programme for African states to participate and an additional occasion especially for SADC member countries. South Africa presides over the SADC at present and, in our view, the vast majority of the issues we have discussed among ourselves in the region, could benefit from direct access to BRICS,” Minister Sisulu said.
According to Sisulu, besides João Lourenço (Angola) and Filipe Nyusi (Mozambique), African heads of state from Namibia, Gabon, Senegal, Uganda, Togo and Rwanda will attend the meeting.
According to the official programme, the meeting between the BRICS leaders and their African counterparts is scheduled for the 27th, the last day of the summit.
Sisulu said that the 10th BRICS Summit would be a “milestone” in the history of BRICS representing a decade of cooperation, and will culminate in the adoption of the Johannesburg Declaration of the targets agreed by the five BRICS member countries.
South Africa’s rotating presidency will run until 31 December 2018.
The 10th BRICS Summit, which brings together a group of emerging powers, will focus on ‘Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution’ and will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre in the north of Johannesburg, where the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and most of the global multinationals operating in Africa have their headquarters.
