National Defense and Security Council (CNDS) urges the Defense and Security Forces to pursue relentlessly its operations against the unidentified persons who have created a climate of instability in the province of Cabo Delgado, in the extreme north of Mozambique.
Meeting in Maputo this Wednesday under the leadership of the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence and Security Forces, Filipe Nyusi, the CNDS applauded the FDS for its actions in restoring order and socio-economic stability, particularly in the north of Cabo Delgado.
According to a press release received yesterday by AIM, the CNDS welcomed the consensus reached by the head of state and Renamo interim coordinator Ossufo Momade, and the constitution of working groups with a view to disarming residual Renamo fighters and integrating them into the Mozambican Defence Forces (FADM) and the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM), along with the social reintegration of others.
It should be noted that the government and Renamo recently signed a memorandum of understanding on military matters, paving the way for disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of the men of the largest opposition party, with a view to achieving effective and lasting peace in Mozambique.
The announcement was made on 6 August in Maputo by President Nyusi, who said that the memorandum resulted from the consensus reached in the last meeting with Ossufo Momade on 11 July of this year.
“The memorandum clearly indicates the road map on military affairs and the subsequent steps that are crucial to achieving effective and lasting peace in disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration,” he said.
At the time, President Nyusi said that the government would announce subsequent steps that depended on the completed memorandum within days.
At the meeting on Wednesday, the CNDS assessed information about the order, security and public tranquillity situation in the country.
Police have recently released the names of Abdul Faizal and Abdul Remane as putative leaders of the insurgent group still at large. The list also names Abdul Rai, Nuro Remane, “Nguvo” Ibin Omar and Salumo as members of the group.
Attacks on villages in Cabo Delgado have already killed dozens of civilians and members of the Defence and Security Forces.
