Five citizens were killed and another five reported missing when the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away by the waters of the Mussapa river in the Sussundenga district of Mozambique’s central Manica province.
A press release from the Manica provincial government states that the incident occurred on Monday when the Mussapa river broke its banks. The victims were travelling in a vehicle belonging to the Chimanimani Reserve.
A total of 21 people were involved in the incident, of whom 11 were rescued and five brought to dry land dead. Another five people are still missing – three Chimanimani Reserve officials and two members of a local community.
The vehicle is still missing too. A search for those missing involving members of local communities and a fire brigade team sent by the Manica provincial government is under way.
