Mozambique: Medal tally at African Games rises to six after Sigaúque's technical knockout win
Mozambique won the Zone 4 African Boxing Championship in Maputo last Saturday with a total of 14 medals, including six gold, two silver and six bronze. The competition attracted national teams from South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Seychelles, Lesotho and Botswana.
The Mozambican victory came as a combination of the results achieved by both men and women. Male boxers Augusto Mathule and Alfredo Muzimba, and female boxers Helena Bagão, Benilde Macaringue, Alcinda Panguane and Rady Gramaneall won gold medals.
Paulo Jorge and Carlos António won the two silver medals, and Hélio Castelo, Zacarias Cossa, José Azarias and Isac Dimande won bronze.
In the overall ranking, South Africa ranked second, followed by Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Seychelles and Swaziland.
This was the first time that Mozambique has won this competition, which serves as a qualifier for the African Boxing Championship, which will take place in June and July in a country yet to be indicated.
