Annual maize transactions by key players in the agricultural market have topped 487,000 tons, representing a total value of 3.1 billion meticais, equivalent to US$106 million.
According to Jorge Foquisso, Director of the Development Services Center of Agricultural Marketing in the Ministry of Commerce, activity in the period of 2006-2014 grew by about 14.1 percent, with maize registering the largest increase.
Speaking at the Seventh National Meeting of Local Governments in Nacala Porto, Foquisso noted that maize, rice, wheat, sorghum, beans, groundnuts, cassava, soybean, sunflower, copra, cashew nuts, tobacco, cotton and sesame are currently the main agricultural products marketed.
Purchases made by food processing industries account for some of the increase.
