The Mozambican government is expected to make an announcement today on the ban on the import of Brazilian chicken meat in force since March 30, a government source has told Lusa.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce will also announce the destination of merchandise “currently held in national territory,” he added.
The Mozambican government decided to suspend imports on March 30 to assess whether the chicken being imported was part of the allegedly adulterated meat detected by the Brazilian Federal Police’s Carne Fraca [“Weak Meat”] investigation.

According to official data, between October 2016 and February 2017, Mozambique imported 360 tons of chicken, 324 through the BRF company and 33 through Seara International, two companies whose names are among those mentioned in the Brazilian operation.
The case is based on suspicions that inspectors received bribes from companies to issue fake certificates for meat whose deadline had expired, using chemicals to disguise the deterioration of the product in some cases.
