Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) held an open heart surgery clinic on Tuesday in partnership with a team of US doctors. The cardiac and thoracic surgery clinic will last for a week, boosting HCM’s two-a-week average.
A team of doctors from San Diego in California is currently in Maputo in order to perform cardiac and thoracic surgery in partnership with the HCM and a team of Mozambican doctors.
On Tuesday morning, open heart surgery using an anaesthetic ventilator was performed at the hospital for the first time. This new device will permit the HCM to operate on children with heart and thoracic problems, which it could not do before.
The San Diego doctors hope their visit to Mozambique will let them share their experience and increase surgical capacity in the country.
The participating Mozambican doctors are full of praise for the initiative, which they say will help improve the technical skills of the entire operating team and improve the quality of surgery in the country.
