Mozambique: Elephants devastate crops in Macossa
Mozambique is on track to surpass grain production targets for the present agricultural campaign, with production in the order of 2.8 million tons. If the figure is reached, it will represent an excess of 100,000 tons over initial predictions of 2.7 million tons, Radio Moçambique reports.
According to Radio Moçambique, Mahomed Valá, National Director of Agriculture and Forestry expressed his optimism on the matter in Quelimane, capital of Zambezia province.
Tuber production is predicted to rise from 10 million tons to over 11 million and vegetables from 700,000 to 800,000 tons.
The cause of the increase is the rainfall in areas considered to the country’s ‘food baskets’ – Tsangano and Angónia in Tete and Chimbonila in Niassa.
National Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mahomed Vala said that one of his sector’s main concerns regarding the current growing season was low rainfall in Cabo Delgado province.
