Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, said on Wednesday that profits generated by natural resources should be used to promote social justice, calling for fair and responsible exploration.
Ahead of the 19th annual conference of the Southern Africa lawyer’s association the head of state said communities should benefit from natural resources, such as natural gas, coal and minerals.
Nyusi added that the state should play a role in a fair and transparent distribution of income, promoting inclusive policies to fight poverty.
He highlighted the need for sustainable exploration of natural resources, as a legacy for the survival of future generations.
The 19th annual conference of the Southern Africa lawyer’s association brings together 500 participants and takes place under the motto “Promoting legal policies inclusive for the sustainable socioeconomic development in the Southern African Development Community (SADC)”.
The meeting will discuss the state of human rights, safeguard of collective and general interests in the communities affected by large natural resource exploration projects and the standardisation of rules for practicing law in the region.
