The province of Nampula hopes to produce 69,000 tons of cashew nuts in the next growing season, an increase of 9,000 tons.
If the target is reached, the province will have enough raw material to supply its twelve processing units as well as for export.
The intention was announced recently at the administrative post of Nanhupo Rio, Mogovolas district, one of the largest producers of the commercial crop in the province, during the launch of a routine programme of integrated cashew management.
Jaime Quissico, provincial delegate of the Institute for Cashew Development (Incaju), said that, to reach the goal, it would be necessary to address the mistakes of the past.
“We want first of all to establish how many machines the suppliers have and how ready they are for the campaign, so as to carry out the maintenance and acquire the atomisers we’ll be using,” said Jaime Quissico.
During the ceremony, maintenance and distribution of atomisers for spraying cashew plants was carried out. Nampula province currently has 3,000 atomisers for spraying its five million cashew trees.
“We know that are also some producers that acquire atomisers every year on their own initiative,” he said.
Quissico said increased production of cashew nuts would finds a market because the processing industry was growing, two more units possibly coming on stream this year.
“Our industry is growing not only in numbers, but also in processing capacity, which encourages producers to increase production volumes,” he said.
The cashew nut production campaign launches officially in the second half of June, in anticipation of which the trees are pruned and cleaned, and sprayed against powdery mildew.
