A total of 1,549 inmates are going to be tried over the next fortnight in seven of Mozambique’s prisons the director of the legal patronage and assistance institute (IPAJ) said on Monday.
Justino Tonela said the trials would help free up space in the country’s prisons and speed up justice.
The programme is going to involve 60 judicial magistrates and 30 magistrates from the public prosecutor’s office, along with lawyers from IPAJ, who will help defend those inmates without any resources.
The campaign is expected to cover inmates held on demand and some who have already been indicted, Justino Tonela added.
He also said that the impact would be hard to foresee as some inmates would be convicted, others found not guilty and some could also be released on bail.
Prisons in Mozambique currently hold 19,000 inmates, mor4e than double their capacity according to official figures.
