The Government announced in Maputo yesterday the creation of a commission to undertake the merger of loss-making public companies Mozambique Telecommunications (TDM) and Mozambique Cellular (MCEL).
Speaking at the end of the 25th session of the Council of Ministers, government spokesman Mouzinho Saide is quoted by AIM as saying that the independent commission, working in tandem with the Institute of State Shareholdings Management (IGEPE), would study the merger of the two companies and propose viable solutions to their financial problems
“The commission and the IGEPE will work together on the restoration of the two companies in order to merge them into a competitive and sustainable unit,” Saíde said. The new company, he added, must be provided with adequate technological, financial and human resources.
Saide also said that the merger would allow the convergence of fixed and mobile services, and voice, data and internet services using fixed and mobile platforms.
