The National Veterinary Directorate of Mozambique has banned imports of poultry products from Zimbabwe due to a bird flu outbreak there, the agency announced today.
In addition to the ban, National Veterinary Director Américo Conceição has asked producers in Mozambique to “increase their vigilance” for symptoms of the disease, according to statements made in today’s edition of the newspaper Notícias.
Officials in Zimbabwe, which borders central and southern Mozambique, slaughtered 700,000 chickens on Thursday after an outbreak of H5N8 avian influenza virus was detected in a production facility.
Although there has never been a “human registry” for that type of virus, “it is necessary to observe biosafety measures to avoid risks of contamination”, Conceição said.
The World Health Organisation says that the possibility of human infection should not be excluded, although the probability is low.
