China's Huati dives after scrapping plan to buy lithium mine in Gilé, Mozambique
The Republic of Mozambique Police General Command (PRM) announced today the seizure of three tons of precious stones from illegal mining in the northern province of Nampula.
Speaking at a weekly police press conference, PRM General Command spokesman Inácio Dina said that the precious stones were seized in the possession of illegal miners, during a campaign conducted by the authorities against the illegal extraction of ores.
“In areas where there is a mining activity with a high incidence of illegal mining by unlicensed individuals, day after day we have been working to discourage this type of practice, making arrests and seizing the product of illegal extraction,” said Inacio Dina, without specifying the type of gems or the number of people eventually arrested in relation to the case.
In addition to Nampula, the PRM’s General Command spokesman pointed to the provinces of Cabo Delgado (north), and Zambézia and Manica (centre) as the ones with the highest illegal extraction of minerals.
Illegal mining in Mozambique, carried out by nationals and expatriates who are usually in the country illegally, is aimed at gold, rubies and emeralds.
